Personal Profile

Dr. Javier Aceves has been working the field of Developmental Disabilities and Chronic Disease for over twenty years, beginning at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston.  As chief of the Division of Pediatric Chronic Diseases, he founded the Chronic Health Oriented Services for Niños (C.H.O.S.E.N.) program to provide a medical home for children and youth with chronic and disabling conditions and their families.  In 1990 Dr. Aceves came to New Mexico as the Pediatric Director for Carrie Tingley Hospital to establish a chronic disease program at UNM.

In 1993 Dr. Aceves became interested in assisting the NM Department of Health to address the statewide needs of people with developmental disabilities.  As a result the Continuum of Care Project was established.  Since the beginning the goals have been to educate & train student trainees and practitioners from around the state; to offer consultation and multidisciplinary supports on developmental disabilities and related chronic conditions; and to provide insight into policy development and advocacy to the Developmental Disabilities Support Division (formerly Long Term Services Division, formerly Division of Developmental Disabilities).

After more than ten years of highly stimulating academic work and service Dr. Aceves feels strongly that the Continuum of Care Project’s mission is ongoing and evolving.  He is excited to explore creative means to educate, train and advocate for persons with developmental disabilities throughout the lifespan.  His primary clinical work is a Young Children’s Health Center, where he sees children of all ages in his general practice.
